It is a well-known phenomenon in audioland: the orientation of the mains plug is decisive for the sound quality of the component connected to the mains. However, many people don't have this in order, because they simply are not aware of this problem. The problem is further aggravated because many audiophiles don't know how to use a multimeter. Experienced listeners may be able to do this by just listening, but it is a laborious and time consuming task this way.
Finally it has arrived: a highly effective and easy to use device, to be used by anyone. It is called the ULTIMATE POLARITY CHECKER, or UPC.
The two red LEDs on top of the UPC will tell you the phase of the outlet it is plugged into. It also enables you to check the ground (if no LED lights, there's an interruption in the ground, or the UPC was plugged into a non-grounded outlet).
Just plug the mains plug of the Device Under Test (DUT) into the UPC, then you can easily determine the right orientation of the mains plug by using the display of the UPC. You can use the UPC for grounded as well as non-grounded audio components.
Responce from a customer, Manuel Carvalho from Portugal:
The UPC is one of the most effective and important pieces of equipment I ever invested in. I consider myself experienced as far as my systems go, and try to make them perform as well as I can. I'm also always very careful about mains and phase installation. With the UPC I found FOUR components out of phase. Of course, correcting that allowed for more tuning in other areas and explained why some things felt wrong. Sometimes, the phase of a key component or the room acoustic will disguise an incorrect output, so it is imperative to be 100% sure.
So, thank you Ronald, and Kemp. I'll say it again: buying the UPC was one of the best decisions I ever made.
